Finding Your Purpose Part II

In part 1, we established the necessity of finding your life purpose. Today let’s talk about how.

Unfortunately, I wish I could tell you I’m about to wave a magic wand and if you didn’t know what your purpose was before you found me, now that you have, you will know without question.

Life doesn’t always work that way. And living is a PROCESS of understanding ourselves, and, growth. Some of you will leave this exercise with the answer, some will leave having an idea of what the answer is, and some will still remain in the dark. But don’t lose heart if that’s you. You have been created for a purpose and it’s dying to reveal itself to you. It’s just buried underneath your own conditioning or lack of belief that you have one. Once you acknowledge you’re on the path of figuring it out, it will make itself known to you. The more enthused you are about it, meaning not just a passive interest, but a real eagerness to know, revelation will come quicker. Your intention and attention to it matters.

Let me also say your age is not a factor. You can find purpose at 80 years of age and become as alive as you were when you were young. That’s the beauty and value of purpose.

Okay, now let’s figure out how to do it.

Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed and where you can write for a few minutes. Set paper and pen to the side and take a few moments to center yourself…a few deep breaths in, hold it, and release all tension in the outward breath.

Now, think about you as your larger self or the real you. Disconnected from daily life…getting gas, making lunches etc. Think of yourself at the core of your being and write down answers to the following questions.

What are you naturally gifted at doing? What is your superpower? The thing you do better than most people? Now isn’t the time to be humble. Be bold and proud of your gift.

What are you naturally drawn to? Concepts, working hands on? What ideals move you?

What do people come to you for?

If you could start life over again, what would you do?

If you’re still stumped, that’s okay. Let’s look for your category.

Generally speaking, people will fall into certain categories in the call to help humanity and the roles within those categories are nuanced and varied. Do any of these categories resonate with you?

Administrators: Leaders, supervisors, love being in charge, establishing ways of doing things

Healer/Teachers: Usher humanity forward, concerned about the development of people and the planet

Artist/Creators: Use their gift to offer creative works of beauty, reflection or to entertain us

Servers: Are hands on, offering direct, life sustaining support to humanity

Analyzers: Are good with information, gathering useful knowledge and data to support humanity.

If you’re still stumped, I highly recommend personality assessments. I’m certified as a Myers Briggs practitioner so that’s the profile I’m most familiar with but there are others and many are available online at no cost.

Take a test and see if the results resonate with you. If they do, you’re on the right path to determining your life’s work. Stay with the process, even if it takes a little while. The reward of finding work you love will be well worth it.
