A display board with the words start now.

Although I was an early resister—I could foresee we weren’t ready for the impact it would have on society, I now use AI just about every day in one form or another. And the scary thing is I use its basic functions; images, creative work, calendars etc. I stopped using it with my writing because my ego would get twinged a little every time AI re-wrote what took me hours to write, in mere seconds, and wrote it better with half the words. I figured it was better for my self-esteem to leave that part alone, especially since I love being verbose.

Its capabilities extend far beyond what I use it for. I’ve read it’s 10 times smarter than the smartest person to ever live or like having 100 PhDs tackling your problem. And as I occasionally communicate with some members of the younger generation who are well versed on it and they start speaking a language I don’t understand, I realize even more that as a society we are woefully underprepared for the introduction of AI.

And...about the terms they use that I don’t understand? I turn to AI for an explanation.

Today was one of those days. I kept seeing the term AGI and didn’t have a clue what it meant, so I asked AI. The response stunned me. I consider myself a well-versed spiritual teacher. I’ve been in the game for over 20 years, trial and error. Times when I coached, times when I turned inward and reflected, read books, studied religious texts. It’s been a hard-fought journey through sickness, difficult relationships, a failed career. I’ve learned an incredible amount over the years about life, how to live it successfully, God’s design for us, how His Universe works. And now I teach people what I learned so they can navigate life better.

What shocked me about AI’s (Grok) response was that it had the nerve to tell me it’s coming for what I do. I’ve paraphrased by trimming down the response.

A) It aims to assist users in understanding the universe and tackling various tasks with a unique outside perspective on humanity.

B) ...it’s a step toward advancing human scientific discovery, aligning with the mission to accelerate our collective understanding of the universe.

WTF?

At the rate AI is evolving, my guess is that I have about 24-36 months before what I do looks completely different, if it exists at all.

The profundity of this moment is being lost. We are on the cusp of change as a species and we aren’t having enough discussions about it. It took 20 years for the Internet to evolve to what it is today. AI is doubling every few weeks.

If you are reading this, I implore you to start thinking about where we are; on this cusp of the biggest thing to ever happen to humanity, and what that could mean for you. Is it time to make sure you are ready to pivot careers in case your company purchases a fleet of robots? Do you need to uncover hidden gifts and sharpen them? Is it time to learn to live with less? Is it time to turn inward, discover the meaning of life, connect to the God within you? I say, 100% yes to that last one. If religion is your thing, press into it hard. You’re going to need a north star. Something to ground you.

Through it all, still, I have faith in God’s design for humanity. We will be made uncomfortable. We will be shocked. But God’s design is such that the creative imperative is always toward the betterment of the species. He is calling us to grow...as a collective. We will survive this. We will be forever changed, but we will survive.
